BENEO’s Isomaltulose May Boost GLP-1 Release in Overweight Individuals, Study Suggests

A new study has shed light on the potential benefits of isomaltulose, a low-glycemic carbohydrate produced by BENEO, in promoting the release of GLP-1, a hormone known for its role in weight management and glucose regulation.

The research, conducted by scientists at the University of Toronto, investigated the effects of isomaltulose consumption on GLP-1 secretion in overweight individuals. The study involved 20 participants who consumed either isomaltulose or sucrose in a randomized, double-blind, crossover trial.

The findings revealed that isomaltulose consumption led to a significantly higher increase in GLP-1 levels compared to sucrose. This effect was observed both in the early and late postprandial phases, suggesting that isomaltulose may have a prolonged impact on GLP-1 secretion.

GLP-1, short for glucagon-like peptide-1, is a hormone produced in the gut that plays a crucial role in regulating appetite, promoting satiety, and improving insulin sensitivity. Its potential to support weight management has garnered significant interest, particularly in light of the success of GLP-1 agonist medications like Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro.

While the study was conducted on a small scale, the results highlight the potential of isomaltulose as a functional ingredient that could be incorporated into food products or supplements to support weight management strategies. By naturally boosting GLP-1 levels, isomaltulose may offer a complementary approach to existing pharmacological interventions or lifestyle modifications.
